Thanks very much for your response.
Unfortunately, I don't seem able
to change the mode of my Orinoco Gold card to "master":

[tim@martha ~]$ sudo iwconfig eth0 mode master
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
    SET failed on device eth0 ; Operation not supported.
