since (as i understand it) i need to rebuild pine from the source to add

as a quick test to see if it would build out of the box, but what i got

Not a direct answer, but you can also get a pine rpm/srpm from
rpm.livna.org.

p.s. if anyone wants to chime in here, i'd feel better knowing that,
in order to add SMTP authentication to pine, i really do have to edit
the source and add a PASSFILE= directive to pine/pine.h before
rebuilding. unlesss there's a simpler solution. thanks again.

AFAIK, PASSFILE only adds the ability to save passwords from session to session. And, livna's pine already has that feature enabled, provided the file ~/.pine.pwd exists.
