More often than not this means that the font server, xfs, is not running; you've run out of space on one of your partitions; or your fonts are messed up. To fix make sure xfs is running (as root: service xfs status), you have space to write on all your partitions (df) and fix your fonts ( reinstall them. This is very rarely needed).
