You're probably right! It (rhgb) is on the kernel command line, but
it's followed by "quiet".. I looked through the man and info pages
for grub, but didn't find a reference. Is that what is squelching
rhgb? 
I get no graphical bootup, and would like to know, so as to not be
ignorant (or stupid!)
