Thanks to Kam Leo and Robert Locke. Installing the update-testing version of module-init-tools didn't help me. But I discovered that using the system-config-display tool, and setting the display to something higher than 1024x768 (thousands of colors) did fix (work around) the problem. Since the fedora system is never powered off, and seldom rebooted, I'll wait for the stable updates to trickle down through, and let yum handle it. (Unless the developers need some details from here.)
