Yah I think I am needing a backup. It would be nice to see a system-config-backup so that I don't have to go setting up a backup script on every system I touch.

That depends on how the file got corrupted. I suggest that
you unmount the disc and run fsck on it before attempting
any "repairs" to the file system by hand. After fsck has had
a shot at it, then it is probably ok to remove the file.
Step one, as always, is back up everything.
