If you hardlink the files underneath, you shouldn't need any
directory links at all - but then you can get out of sync if
links are deleted separately.  Sometimes that would be an
advantage.

Have you considered using the Dovecot or Cyrus IMAP servers
so you don't have to do anything special to read with
different programs?
