MTA's won't and probably should not sort message, MUA's should be able
to sort on received time.  Evolution allows this, I use it this way
probably for the same reason the OP is trying to change the date.  

As another poster wrote, changing the date on a message is not really a
good idea.  Sorting messages on date/time received should achieve what
the user is trying to do.
