I have FC4 on Celereon 2,4 512RAM, Seagate 120*10^9 bytes. I was writing a letter in Evolution when my system started to behave as if it was extremaly loaded (it was almost impossible to move mouse arrow). I noticed hdd-activity, then it ceased, still no application was working. At that moment I ran several terminals doing nothing, Evolution, Kate. That's what I found in /var/log/messages after I did reload it (it gave such a possibility): 19:35:25 kernel: oom-killer: gfp_mask=0x1d2 19:35:28 kernel: Mem-info: 19:35:32 kernel: DMA per-cpu: 19:35:32 kernel: cpu 0 hot: low 2, high 6, batch 1 19:35:32 kernel: cpu 0 cold: low 0, high 2, batch 1 19:35:32 kernel: Normal per-cpu: 19:35:32 kernel: cpu 0 hot: low 62, high 186, batch 31 19:35:32 kernel: cpu 0 cold: low 0, high 62, batch 31 19:35:32 kernel: HighMem per-cpu: empty 19:35:32 kernel: Free pages: 4788kB (0kB HighMem) 19:35:32 kernel: Active:123553 inactive:689 dirty:0 writeback:0 unstable:0 free:1197 slab:2158 mapped:123278 pagetables:609 19:35:32 kernel: DMA free:2068kB min:88kB low:108kB high:132kB active:11388kB inactive:0kB present:16384kB pages_scanned:12077 all_unreclaimable? yes 19:35:32 kernel: lowmem_reserve[]: 0 495 495 19:35:34 kernel: Normal free:2720kB min:2800kB low:3500kB high:4200kB active:482824kB inactive:2756kB present:507584kB pages_scanned:78200 all_unreclaimable? no 19:35:36 kernel: lowmem_reserve[]: 0 0 0 19:35:43 kernel: HighMem free:0kB min:128kB low:160kB high:192kB active:0kB inactive:0kB present:0kB pages_scanned:0 all_unreclaimable? no 19:35:43 kernel: lowmem_reserve[]: 0 0 0 19:35:43 kernel: DMA: 1*4kB 0*8kB 1*16kB 0*32kB 0*64kB 0*128kB 0*256kB 0*512kB 0*1024kB 1*2048kB 0*4096kB = 2068kB 19:35:43 kernel: Normal: 0*4kB 0*8kB 0*16kB 1*32kB 0*64kB 1*128kB 0*256kB 1*512kB 0*1024kB 1*2048kB 0*4096kB = 2720kB 19:35:43 kernel: HighMem: empty 19:35:43 kernel: Free swap: 0kB 19:35:43 kernel: 130992 pages of RAM 19:35:43 kernel: 0 pages of HIGHMEM 19:35:43 kernel: 2001 reserved pages 19:35:43 kernel: 4416 pages shared 19:35:43 kernel: 0 pages swap cached 19:35:43 kernel: Out of Memory: Killed process 1558 (klauncher). 19:35:43 kernel: oom-killer: gfp_mask=0x1d2 19:35:44 kernel: Mem-info: 19:35:44 kernel: DMA per-cpu: 19:35:44 kernel: cpu 0 hot: low 2, high 6, batch 1 19:35:44 kernel: cpu 0 cold: low 0, high 2, batch 1 19:35:44 kernel: Normal per-cpu: I never saw such records in the messages as well as never experienced such a problem.
