The reviews I read said that the sound was basically entry-level.  Which
is fine with me.  I don't need surround sound or anything fancy like
that.  It turns out that this problem is not at all related to the smp
kernel problem I originally thought, but is an esound bug:

It sure would be nice to get an esound update.

When I applied the suggestions in the comments, sound cleaned right up.
