The solution, sent to me off-list, was to move aside my firefox
settings directory (~/.mozilla/firefox), restart firefox to make a new
one, then cpoy back important files (like bookmarks.html and prefs.js;
there are others, like mimeTypes.rdf, but I didn't need them).
