The firware is loaded onto the card when it is initialised, you don't get a message unless it fails. With the 2100, you get a message like: ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection Did you get something about the 2200? If you do "iwconfig", is the card present? If so then the module should have loaded ok and you can go ahead and set up the interface...
