Yes, it is a software function!  If you remove the drive while Linux is
running, it freezes.  I used to be able to do this on the 2.4 kernel by
doing an "rmmod ide-scsi".  Earlier in the 2.5/2.6 days, I was able to
use a nice program called hotswap (used to be at
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~univ1377/, but appears to be gone), but that quit
working around 2.6.6. Anyone have any ideas about how to make the kernel
let go of IDE devices?
