I find it useful when the drive is carved up into multiple volumes for software purposes, but the appropriate sizes of the volumes aren't known in advance or change over time. In that case I divide the drive into equal sized portions, stitch a few together for each of the apps, and leave a couple in reserve for growth. Helps even more if you need to do the same over multiple physical volumes.
