Historically, MySQL got its market share by being faster at the expense of full-featured which is a good tradeoff for a mostly read-only web server backend, Meanwhile, PostgreSQL has gotten faster, MySQL has more features, and web apps have gotten more complicated. At this point I'd probably pick PostgreSQL for a new project but stick to MySQL for an existing package that was developed for it even if compatibility for other databases has been tacked on.
