i've installed libsane-hpaio, this created the files in /usr/lib/sane.
sane-find-scanner still doesn't find any scanner, as i think, a
/etc/sane.d/hpaio.conf is still missing...

OK heres what I did :
Installed : hplip-0.9.4-1.1.i686.rpm
hpijs-0.9.4-1.1.i686.rpm
libsane-hpaio-0.9.4-1.1.i686.rpm
Hand built from src.rpm but the i386 are in 'updates-testing'
Run # /etc/init.d/hplip
# /etc/init.d/cups
Then for good measure 'ldconfig'
Switch on the PSC,boot the Gimp >File>Acquire - there's the scan page ..
