Random app lockups in FC4

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hello all,

I upgraded from FC3 to FC4, wiping everything except for my /home
and /usr/local paritions. Ever since the upgrade, I've had stability
problems with Gnome, and it's driving me batty.

Here's a list of apps that are locking up:

- Evolution
- Firefox
- BMP
- Gnome-Terminal
- Gnome Panels (can't click any launchers or access the Gnome menu)

These were locking up, but haven't in the last couple of days (no idea
why):

- Volume Applet
- Volume Control

On top of the lockups, the amount time between them is all over the
place. Sometimes, right after I've restarted X, I open Evolution and it
locks up within 2 minutes. Other times, it runs happily for hours. The
other apps exhibit similar issues.

Thinking that perhaps it was a use prefs problem, I backed up my home
directory, and deleted my user name. I added myself as a new user
again, and selectively moved data into the new home folder. The bits I
didn't move were .gconf* and .gnome*. For a little while, this appeared
to clear up the issue, but then lockups returned with a vengence.

I went through the whole backup/recreate process again. This time, I
was even more selective and didn't move over my .evolution folder. I
recreated my email accounts, configured my preferences for Evolution,
and manually imported all mail. But, the random lockups remain.

I'm quite frustrated at the moment because I had a perfectly stable, and
excellent FC3 system. I knew that FC4 had issues, but I wasn't aware of
any that would overly affect my day to day use of it. Man, was I wrong!

Has anyone experienced similar problems? I've seen threads about
Firefox lockups and constant panel restarts. But, I haven't noticed
anything about the sound apps and Evolution.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone what their experience has been
so far. Also, if anyone can provide some suggestions on where I can
begin troubleshooting, that would be great.

Note:

- I haven't seen anything of interest in the logs
- the system is up-to-date, as of today
- a memory test will be performed shortly (but I doubt there's a
  hardware problem)

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Ranbir
