For me, the problem was that sound going through ESD sounded distorted.  The fix
was to go through and change apps to use ALSA directly.  FC4 automatically
configures dmix plugin for soundcards that need it so multiple programs can talk
to the sound card simultaneously.  XMMS definitely has an ALSA plugin.

There are a few apps which don't work with ALSA.  The ones I trouble with were
games which use SDL.  For those, I followed the advice in a bug report and
upgraded to the esound from rawhide, version 0.2.36.
