Using g77 instead of gfortran in FC4

gfortran won't compile R packages for installation (plus the man pagesays it is not really a complete Fortran compiler). I removed gfortranand have installed g77 but now when I try to do an R package install, itstill wants to use gfortran. How do I get the system to use g77?
