I recall reading either in this mailing list or finding a web site where someone detailed how you can pass to the kernel which network profile you want enabled during the boot process. So, for example, you could setup a couple of choices in grub that boot the same kernel, but with different network profiles specified. This would let you choose between booting with eth0 enabled, or wlan0. Google around. Hopefully the above gives you enough info to find what you need to set it up.
