Behavior similar to this has been the case since about Red Hat 3.0 IIRC (at least for the last several years, and no I don't mean RHEL 3 :-). Are you sure that what you refer to as "instantly shut my computer down" is not just the black text screen with a virtual console login prompt? Did you try Ctrl-Alt- F7 or Alt-F7 to get back to X?
