You can always switch to tty3 (Ctrl-Alt-F3)and tty4(Ctrl-Alt-F3) for
all the installation logggin.
Did you try to do a text install? How much memory do you have in your
computer? Are you using acpi?
I had a problem similar to this on the test release. It left a partially
formed tree and updated a few packages. All processes seemed to be
stopped except for a few basic processes. I could still use the shell.
I got past this problem with adding more memory to my computer. The
problem did not hsppen on an upgrade, just a clean install. Your problem
might not be this type, but just in case, I thought I'd bring up the
problem that I encountered. The text installation presented me with the
same sort of failure. Additional memory was the key.
