Also, I've noticed an error message during the boot process that occurs if I leave the DVD in the drive while booting Fedora:
mknod: failed to create /dev/console:17
mknod: failed to create /dev/null:17
mknod: failed to create /dev/zero:17
hdc: timeout waiting for DMA
hdc: drive not ready for command

This is probably a dumb question, but have you tried booting with ide=nodma ?
