Thank you for the advice. I have upgraded to the latest kernel,
(2.6.12-1.1398_FC4).
Unfortunately, this did not solve my problem. As I write this, I have
inserted a data DVD into one of the internal drives (the one I installed
Fedora from), and the light continues to blink without the files on it
being accessible. The drive does not respond to attempts to eject it
either from within Gnome or by pressing the button on the drive itself.
The only way I will be able to remove the DVD is to reboot and press
eject during the boot process, before Linux takes hold (I've been
through this before).
Also, I've noticed an error message during the boot process that occurs
if I leave the DVD in the drive while booting Fedora:
