Thanks for the pointers
I have now in my /etc/fstab
/dev/sdb1               /mnt/windows_g          vfat    rw,user,noauto 0 0

I unmounted the removable drive and used
mount -a /dev/sdb1 /mnt/windows_g
so that it would re-read the fstab

still no joy
I am reading up a little on the greenfly link and hope to
glean more from there
