I had a similar experience. I solved the problem by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf. In the section "Screen" you can define: DefaultDepth 16 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection Remark: the Modes-line should be on one line!
