Except when that's not possible because the latest and greatest packages have dependencies on much later versions of libraries that the old distro can provide. For example, Dag has no bittorrent 4.x package for anything older than FC2 (and neither does anyone else of course). Eventually the old distros become simply unsupportable, at least for desktop apps.
