I had the same problem; my sound was working but the gnome volume controller was not. I found a solution on a forum somewhere. As root run: gst-register-0.8

Hi, Several days I had the same problem, but today it is gone. I thought it is somehow connected with the broken selinux policy, but rather it is not, I dont know. I have the nightly yum update enabled :)
Sorry it is not a big help ;(

This is a "me too". This problem has cropped up in the just the last few days. It seems to be related to the gnome volume control app (version 2.8.0). Oddly, gkrellm and the gnome volume control master control (left-click on the speaker icon) works correctly. Alsamixer also works correctly.
Restarting the volume control applet causes the master control to disappear too.

I added my comments there.
