This is a "me too". This problem has cropped up in the just the last few days. It seems to be related to the gnome volume control app (version 2.8.0). Oddly, gkrellm and the gnome volume control master control (left-click on the speaker icon) works correctly. Alsamixer also works correctly.

Restarting the volume control applet causes the master control to
disappear too.

Hi, I got mine fixed. It seems some components were locked by root

I login as root, did gnome-volume-control, untick some related item. then, login as normal user, I can do volume control. hope this of help to you.
