Rebooting again did not solve the > problem. I have a T41 and I experienced the same thing yesterday. For some reason, I could not run gnome-volume-control.. I kept getting the "Sorry no mixer..." message you indicated above. This was after about 20 days of uptime, so I figured I'd reboot. As you noted, rebooting did not work. I ran system-config-soundcard, which worked fine. I ran gnome-volume-control again and this time it worked. Anyway, I have no helpful suggestions other than to say that I have the same hardware and experienced the same problem. This is probably worth filing a bugzilla report over, but I have no idea how to reproduce the problem.
