hald will not start

After the upgrade from core 3 to 4, hald will not start.  I just get
Starting HAL daemon: [Faild]. A couple of other services did not start
either, and when I went to see what they were in the boot log, I found I
wasn't getting any boot logs.  Anybody have any ideas?
