I'm using Fedora Core 3
The scanner has been installed by Fedora itself
The first time I was surprised to not find the scanner on programs using it. By error in a root terminal I said xsane & I was surprised that xsane found the scanner at the beginning..
Thank for your answer Jim
Which version of Fedora? There was a change made that changes the scanners to the first (GUI) console user will be set to be owner of the usb file related to the scanner. If it is FC3, a bug might need to be filed with your hardware specific information.

Read this bug report, though messy. There were a lot of bugs marked as duplicates. Maybe the links to othe bugs will help as well.

The general search I tried was below. The link is a very long one and most likely will wrap.
