At the prompt, you need to 
# su - root
# yourpsswd
# modprobe slamr
# /usr/sbin/slmodemd --COUNTRY=YOURCOUNTRY /dev/slamr0
# 

You should see that message that slmodemd is now
connected press ctrl c to end ??

Then use kppp/wvdial to access the internet.
