You need to simply pick a username that you want
to use, and choose a password for it. Linux doesn't
support completely lacking a username. So as a minimum,
you will have the "root" user (that's the administrative
password you put in at the beginning) and one "normal"
user, which you will use for your day-to-day work.

I think that the problems with dual booting XP were fixed, 
so the solution you give of partitioning, then installing 
XP, then installing Fedora should work. You can leave the 
Fedora space as unpartitioned space on the hard disk.
