Symlink points to the wrong place - it should be:
$ ls -l /etc/grub.conf
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 May 20 2004 /etc/grub.conf -> ../boot/grub/grub.conf
my mistake. i meant to type /boot/grub - which does not exist on this machine (after running up2date).
3) /etc/grub/grub.conf does not exist 4) /etc/grub/ does not exist
has something gone wrong? how can grub be configured if there are no configuration files or directories existing for it?
thanks for any help.
Not sure how your system got into this state, but the files should be in /boot/grub, not /etc/grub.
Paul.
grub must exist somewhere on the filesystem or grub couldn't boot the system. It has to read grub.conf and (possibly stage1_5 and) stage2 binaries from somewhere.
Maybe you have a /boot partition which just isn't mounted?
