Gunzip unknown suffix -- ignored

I have been attempting to compress a file with gunzip, however when
trying the error unknown suffix -- ignored error keeps on popping up.
The command I am using is without the quotes, "gunzip -v9 file.tar",
I even tried "gunzip -v9 -S .gz file.tar" any ideas?
