Cool command:

lsof -n | grep /dev/cdrom

This will show if any process has an open file handle on /dev/cdrom.
There have been problems with gam_server IIRC fondling your cdrom.  If
that is who is touching it (and so stopping the unmount) have a google /
look through bugzilla about gam_server.

Another way to get the problem is if you have a terminal open with your
cdrom mountpoint as the current working directory.  That'll show up from
lsof -n too.
