You are right David and I was wrong. I checked the Apache2 documentation
at

http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_alias.html

and found the note about the trailing slash which means, that the alias
should be set for /webmail and not /webmail/.

Concluded from Corey's further testing and replies that seems so.
