Well, I stopped the pcmcia service and removed the card, then put it back in,
thus crashing the system. When I rebooted, I was shocked to find that my
wireless card is working.

Typical. As soon as I post about it, the thing starts working. I swear,
they're like cats sometimes.

Thanks Alexander,

I also moved the directory over to an alternate disk and put in a symbolic
link. I found 3587 files in the up2date directory but it only has a few RPM
files. Seems like a lot of information to keep around. I upgraded this
system from Fedora Core 2 to Core 3 and applied the updates. I can't say
that I'm very happy with the upgrade path. I lost the automount of CDROMs
and some packages have some mysterious problems. I think I will back up my
data the next time and "upgrade" by simply loading a new version and
replacing the OS.

Frank

Keep the .hdr files. I suggest you reconfigure up2date to not keep the
RPMs after installation, if disk space is an issue for you.

Well for me, some mirror sites (planetmirror, aarnet) offer MUCH more
via HTTP than via rsync - for planetmirror it's a side effect of their
paying-members-get-more-bandwidth system (which only works for HTTP,
not RSYNC). For AARNet it seems to be some kind of maintenance or
policy issue. Let me state that I MUCH prefer rsync for mirroring.

At any rate, some things are only available via HTTP.

I have my own problems with wget; not authentication since I'm mirroring
public repositories. My invocation says:

wget --mirror -D hostname -nH --cut-dirs=ncut -P local-dir http://blah...

where ncut is set to get the right portion of the tree. It seems to leak
out of the site (or, possibly, out of the HTTP subtree) into other data
producing a currupt mirror at my end.

Are people aware of problems with --mirror? Are there options I shouldn't
use with it? Is there a standard recipe for mirroring http://blah/sub/path
into an arbitrary subdir _without_ the leading cruft dirs wget normally
prepends (thus the --cut-dirs)?

Cheers,

I thought it was resolved, but it turned out the WAP had not restored WEP
encryption like I thought it had. So, the wireless card works fine with WEP
turned off, but not when it's turned on. I've tried:

# iwconfig wlan0 key XXXXXXXXXX restricted

which generates this error:

Error for wireless request "Set Encode" (8B2A):
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.

My Googling indicates that this might mean that the card does not support
encryption, which I find unlikely since it certainly does under Windows.

I also tried:

# iwconfig wlan0 key 0xXXXXXXXXXX restricted

That generated no errors, but did not give me connectivity.

Richard,

what card are you using? I'm running the internat IPW2100 card (Intel stuff)
on my ThinkPad. It started to work fine after I got the firmware downloaded
and installed correctly.

To get it going I used the GUI netconfig tool (Under System Tools -> Network
Device Control in KDE). I set up the key and all that stuff there. Be careful
to use the right number of characters for WEP. the 64-bit WEP used 5 bytes
(actually only 40 bit encryption). The 160 bit (I think that what it is) uses
13 bytes for encryption.

Since the card works without WEP, my initial thought of checking your MAC
filtering on the WAP would be a moot point, but I mention it anyway.

Also, make sure that you're actually talking to your WAP and not some other
thing that one of your neighbors uses.

Best regards,
Chris

I'm using a Linksys WPC54GS (with something called "speedbooster", whatever
the heck that is).

Yeah, I've quadruple-checked that. Heh. Thanks, though.

I do filter on MAC addresses, but I've made sure the MAC address for my
wireless card is on the list of allowed cards.

Yup.

Hah! Got it.

Deep in the heart of /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices, I found two files:
ifcfg-wlan0, and keys-wlan0. I made sure that ifcfg-wlan0 had the right
entry for my WAP under ESSID; then in keys-wlan0, I found that the line for
KEY= was blank. I put in my encryption key, reactivated wlan0 and
deactivated eth0 (and even unplugged the cable), restarted networking, and
even rebooted for the hell of it. SUCCESS!

That was the longest eight hours I've ever spent trying to get a wireless card
working under Linux. But now I'm finally MS free on my new laptop (well,
mostly; still using a Windows driver for my wireless under ndiswrapper, of
course, but what the hell).

Also, you should check out Hula (http://hula-project.org/), which is in
early stages of development in one sense, but is based upon a *very*
mature codebase. See my blog entry about it:

http://www.dzr-web.com/people/darren/blog/2005/02/15/novell-announce-hula/

and in particular this link to Nat Friedman's blog:

http://nat.org/2005/february/#15-February-2005

Also, this link to something by Jamie Zawinski:

http://www.jwz.org/doc/groupware.html

is both one of the best things I've read in a long while and provides
some of background to the aims of Hula with respect to calendar sharing.

Best, Darren

Finally, a solution to the problem that might actually work. ;-)

Unforch, the mail server would have to translate the To: address
according to whether or not the message contained top-posting I'd
think, because we'ed otherwise fail at convincing said twits to use
the right list.

That shouldn't be too hard to code up in a bash script I'd think.

Until someone creates a tutorial on email formatting with an exam one
must pass before subscribing to this list, we are unlikely to see much
consistency. To enforce it among those who managed to subscribe, modify
the list server to mark up and return any posts that don't adhere to
standards:
"Your message to the list has been rejected for:
     Top posting
     HTML
     Spelling error
  Please correct and resubmit."
Or maybe, with the excess profits from running this list we could hire a
style conscious moderator.

Thanks for help with Fedora issues I didn't understand before. As long
as this list caters to those who don't know everything about ..IX,
newbies' lacking knowledge of experts' style preferences will probably
be with us. Try not to stress.

do you know what authentification you are using Open System or Shared

belived to be less secure, nevertheless the name - vole MS even
doesn't recommend to use it). Check what you have in your AP settings

My laptop never works with the system-config-display tool (1440x900),
and I have a feeling it's because the laptop monitor is sending
incorrect info to the X server. You may have to set a custom modeline
(and possibly instruct X not to listen to the monitor's info).

For the modeline, in a terminal type:

gtf 1280 800 60

This should result in something like:

Modeline "1280x800_60.00" 83.46 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 828
-HSync +Vsync

Paste the output of this command (as a single line) into your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file under the "Monitor" section. You should also
rename the modeline from "1280x800_60.00" to "1280x800".

Next, you'll need to add "1280x800" to each of the subsections under the
  "Screen" section.

If this alone doesn't work, you may also want to try adding this line to
the Monitor section:

Option "IgnoreEDID" "1"

I hope this helps.
