I use a US Robotics hardware modem on a PCI card.
Well, I don't use it anymore - but I use to. The box it came in had a  
penguin on it and specified it worked with Linux.

Anyway - if an internal modem says it requires Windows, good chance its  
a winmodem - sometimes they work in Linux, often they don't. External  
modems that connect to a real serial port almost always just work with  
Linux.
