Have you tried starting it like this: 

$btdownloadcurses.py --url http://some/torrent/file 


Was it an rpm?  for Fedora? SOP is to use an rpm in general:

http://dag.wieers.com/packages/bittorrent/

you'll need the bittorent matching your install and also sounds like you
want the bittorrent-gui package as well.

Restart your browser, then clicking a torrent file should start
downloading via a bittorrent-gui.
