It turns out the culprit is OpenOffice Writer. Checking Format->Page... Page: Paper Format, this had defaulted to some oddball dimension, neither US letter nor A4. Setting it to my printer's capabilities, fixed the cropping problem. To set writer's default page size for all time, file->templates->edit and do the dirty deed.
