I made the wrong suggestion. strace -o /tmp/scan.txt -E SANE_DEBUG_MUSTEK_PP=1 scanimage -L should do it properly by writing the strace output to the scan.txt file in /tmp and using the environment variable you want to use. See "man strace" for explanations. The strace output file my become quite long.
