Hm, I tried this, and you're right.
However, it uses the eepro100 driver, as I could unload the e100
driver by:
rmmod e100
and the network is still working.

that's because it only uses the eepro100 module for the NIC. If
you want to switch modules for NIC you have to reboot after you
changed /etc/modprobe.conf
Shutting down the network probably doens't work out right.
