Who runs your LAN, and your DHCP server? What platform is it running on?
What name service(s) do you use? DNS? WINS?

The way I do it is to arrange for my DHCP server (running on a Linux
box) to give my Linux boxes static IP addresses (this is done by using a
MAC address to IP address mapping on the DHCP server). I also run the
DNS for the LAN, and static IP addresses make DNS easy :-)

As for the dynamic pool, they get dynamic-looking hostnames too, such
as:

dhcp-10-1-1-1.intranet.example.com
dhcp-10-1-1-2.intranet.example.com

Another way of doing it is by using dynamic DNS updates, but that's
rather more complicated I think.
