The official page refers to the "Fedora Core 3" release. Red Hat is not the only contributor and it's really GNU/Linux. I think the name is kind of like Debian, which has stable, testing and unstable, only Fedora has core, extras, and legacy. See this: http://fedora.redhat.com/participate/terminology.html
