Open Volume control and make sure Rec is ticked for the mic, and the
Mute button is un-ticked. If there's something with Mic Boost, use that
ALSA is what you use in FC, not OSS (we dont even ship support for it)

Gnome volume control on my FC2 system displays controls for both ALSA
(21) and OSS (12). If I am not mistaken, OSS is bundled with/included
in ALSA drivers.
