CUPS/ Kudzu won't detect my PP printer; FC3

I've got a vanilla clone PC (AMD 2.6) with FC3 and all updates
installed. I'm running kernel 2.6.10-1.760

I'm trying to setup a Lexmark Optra S 1855 printer. I can't get kudzu to
detect it.

 The motherboard has a built in PP. I've got it configured to use EPP
+ECP, which works on my laptop. Kudzu doesn't find it.

dmesg gives this:

<paste begins>
...
parport: PnPBIOS parport detected.
parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
pnp: Device 00:08 disabled.
...
pnp: Device 00:08 activated.
parport: PnPBIOS parport detected.
parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
lp0: using parport0 (interrupt-driven).
lp0: console ready
<paste ends>

The "parport0: PC-style..." line changes if I change the port
configuration in the BIOS, ie ECP, EPP, etc.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like Kudzu sets up the port. Is there a way to force cups to
use the printer without Kudzu actually detecting it ?
