I played around a little bit with this and wound up editing:

12:26:59 # /usr/share/festival/languages.scm 

New line: 
 (defvar language_default language_american_english)
 
Old line:
 (defvar language_default language_british_english)

Yes, thank you much, that works. I'm sure there are better alternatives to the voices provided with 1.4.2 but I can use what is there until something more to my taste comes along.
