At first I had problems because the vanilla kernel's framebuffer driver did not support for DVI but this is long gone. Note that you have to use the DRM driver labeled "Matrox g200/g400" if you compile a kernel. Oh, one more thing: use 'Option "HWcursor" "false"' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
